I got a text from my pharmacy that “ATOV” was ready. “Oh my, not again,” I thought. They have mixed up my meds again. I had my cardiac surgeon, cardiologist, and family physician recommend three different statins and I thought they had filled my discontinued Atorvastatin again.
I went into the pharmacy and the pharmacist pulled out the drug and confirmed it by reading the abbreviated label on the cover that it was the statin. Both my pharmacist and I were now very confused about why it was indeed filled. Opening the packet showed us it was Atovaquone-Proguanil - an antimalarial drug prescribed for my ensuing travel to India in the next two weeks.
Both of us made assumptions about the abbreviations. A simple confirmation solved the mystery. Reminded me of the famous Mark Twain quote below.
