Berlin was extremely bike-friendly. Wherever one went there were bike pathways in both directions on either side of the roads. Even young teenagers were out there on their own biking away. Though I would not rate bike density as much as the Dutch say in Amsterdam, the biking around that I could see was quite significant.
Even at the conference I attended there were several participants who biked from 10-20 kilometers away to attend the conference. This is coupled with excellent reach (not efficient) in public transport (buses, trams, S-Bahn, U-Bahn, Regional rail) to get around anywhere one wants to go, and to go generally fairly quickly and with limited amount of walking coupled with it. I compare Toronto with this where we are deficient in both bike-friendliness and public transport by a long margin.
