I am always looking for little nuggets everywhere. And I found several in the new “Lincoln Lawyer” series on Netflix by author and book writer Michael Connelly. It was a decent watch especially if one enjoys courtroom drama. This is a spinoff continuing the earlier Matthew McConaughey movie storyline from 2011.
Here is an conversation between the lawyer Mickey and his teenage daughter Hayley offering life advice using a simpler interpretation of a Saint Thomas Aquinas quote which was woven well into the storyline.
Mickey: There are three things you need to know in life, Hayley. What you desire, what you believe, and what you have to do. They don't always line up.
Hayley: Was that from your dad?
Mickey: No, St. Thomas Aquinas. ( laughs ) Your Abuelo was a lot of things, but a saint wasn't one of them.
Life indeed is about balance. Our wants and needs, our beliefs and our action. And constant gaps between these and how we adapt ourselves to balancing these elements.
And here is the original quote by this Catholic Saint (1225-1274).
Three things are necessary for the salvation of man: to know what he ought to believe; to know what he ought to desire; and to know what he ought to do.”
-– St. Thomas Aquinas
