I recently saw this infographic on Global Wealth distribution. Whether one is wealthy depends on whether one looks upwards or downwards on their wealth status from where they are. Yes, I know social ordering and measurements like these have no real meaning. And what wealth is, varies in different countries, contexts, and definitions. Money alone is certainly not wealth or provides happiness by any measure, but it does help.
I always used to think that I am in the disenfranchised group from a being wealthy perspective as I was looking up from where I presumed I was. However, when I saw this chart, I know that I am part of the top 1.1% in the world. Being in this small 85 million subgroup in a global population of 7.8 billion people is certainly a privilege. I am better off monetarily than most of the 7.7+ billion of the world’s population.
Yes, even a few million dollars doesn’t go very far these days in retirement here in North America. And yes there are several million people extremely wealthier than me. But considering that I came to Canada 16 years ago with zero savings, it is certainly great where we are today. Chances are, I probably would never be “rich” in my life, but I am certainly not disenfranchised.
Life’s is good and I consider myself certainly blessed.
Where has life placed you? Do you consider yourself blessed?
