I read this Stoic quote today, which set me thinking…
Nothing should be done without a purpose
— Marcus Aurelius
At first glance, it sounds very judgemental. Until I realized that Marcus actually wrote Meditations only to himself. This was not be published or anyone else to use. These were rules for his own life and nothing but.
And of course, the mind wanders on. If Marcus was a mass appeal coach in these modern times with Twitter and Instagram handles, what would be actually advice others to do? I was certain that his messages would be non-judgemental for sure.
Perhaps it will be like…
Find a purpose for everything you do. It might make it worthwhile.
