I was going on my afternoon walk around the block when I saw an intriguing sign on a parked car in the neighborhood. “Anti Sorrow club” it screamed. A simple Google search informed me that it was a Twitter and Instagram handle for a service providing installation of Hi-Fi components and music systems. Music is anti-sorrow indeed.

But this does not stop me from ruminating on this subject more. And it sent my thoughts soaring as usual. Can there really be an anti-sorrow club? What would one do in such a club? Therapy sessions fighting sorrow?

Sorrow is the antithesis of happiness. Is there a possibility of having happiness without sorrow? Only when there is sorrow then humans can realize the value of happiness. Without any sorrow at all, there will be no happiness. So, we do need sorrow as a comparator in order to realize value from its alternatives.

I read somewhere if that life was unlimited or longer than we live where we don’t worry about death, we would not put it to productive use as there will be no pressure or imperative to do so. Sorrow is similar. We need sorrow to have happiness. Perhaps the more sorrow we have, the more happiness we could have at the other end of the spectrum.

Anti sorrow club, anybody? And we will create some sorrow there first, in order to realize the value of happiness.
