Verum, Pulchrum, Bonum
Muse #222 - lifelong journey of exploring ones virtues
I have been reading several works of Howard Gardner over the last couple of months. And I ain’t done with them just yet. These have been written over a 30-40 year period and what amazes me as I read several books from his journey is the incessant introspection of his own works and how he evolved them and continues to evolve them. It is interesting to see Howard himself considers his works idealist and possibly something that is not realistic for everyone or anyone. Even though each work is at a point in time, he works to negate his own work by questioning it and perhaps evolving it.
It is a journey of discovery of one’s virtues - Verum, Pulchrum, Bonum. The Latin phrase of determining “truth, beauty, goodness.”
One needs to balance these three in everything we do. What is true might not be beautiful or good. What is good might not be true or beautiful. And what is beauty might not be either good or true. There in we are left with this conundrum all our lives as we work our way through this. And as long as some higher truth, beauty, and goodness emerges from our journey, perhaps we can consider having done well with it.
